The first race of 2018 and the traditional start of the running season, the fourth time I’d taken the start-line at Tamaques Park. This time it was different. Why? 48 hours prior I was not racing. Rather I would attend to spectate and support fellow runners (plus I wanted my CJRRC hoody!). December had been challenging for running, dealing with a groin and hip injury, legacy of the 2017 NYC Marathon. After a consultation at a local sports chiropractor I felt good enough to run, with a plan to use the race to see how my groin and hip felt rather than push and injure myself further. It would be a tempo run, being mindful of my greater 2018 goals.
It was a freezing cold morning, far from ideal for racing. Despite the conditions over 500 runners bravely lined up for the start. Once the race started everything felt good. Pace of 6:30’ish was comfortable (mobility in my hip was around 75%, groin was largely pain free). A small group of runners pulled me along, although I held back from pushing on. In the final mile I had a nice tussle with a runner. Twice he sped up when I got level, so instead of going with him I kept my pace consistent. The third time I passed and finished 3-4 seconds ahead. It was a good way to end the race.
Following the race I didn’t feel good. Almost immediate pain in my hip and groin. More recovery is needed. However I answered the question about how they felt. It just wasn’t the answer I wanted.
Now a few weeks to get ready for the next race, the NYRR Fred Lebow Half Marathon in Manhattan and two loops of Central Park. Recovery calls for more sessions with the chiropractor, slow runs and time on the static bike. And rest.
